The exhibition DUAL USE - Human in the Loop explores technologies that straddle civilian and military applications against the backdrop of the “Zeitenwende”: from AI and facial recognition to automated warfare, and the question of what role universities and research institutions play in this context. Documentary, artistic, and activist perspectives shed light on these interconnections and examine the issue of responsibility in an era of renewed military buildup. We invite you to the opening and look forward to conversations, discussions, and an evening together. Admission is free.

Directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor Over the course of three years, Abraham and Szor spoke with members of the Israeli military and intelligence services. Twenty-four Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers speak anonymously in the film; their voices and appearances have been digitally altered. Their statements form the basis for an examination of the military structures, decision-making processes, and technologies behind Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza. Following the Oscar success of NO OTHER LAND, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor return with a new, highly topical documentary: NAZA celebrated its world premiere on September 10 in the competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where it was met with a 25-minute standing ovation.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the question: What can we do when civilian institutions are increasingly being used for military purposes? To establish a common ground for discussion, there will be various contributions from activist perspectives on this topic. We’ve invited international organizations such as Academics for Justice, Quantum Scientists for Disarmament, and the International Youth Association (IJV), as well as local campaigns like “Nicht unser Krieg” and student representatives. After a coffee break together, we’ll all discuss the Europe-wide wave of protests by high school and college students. Finally, we’ll watch a short documentary about the “Schulstreik gegen Wehrpflicht” movement here in Hamburg. Feel free to stop by and bring your friends! Admission is free.

For a week, our exhibition explored technologies with both civilian and military applications. To conclude, we turn our attention to the “Zeitenwende”: What does it mean when military logic spreads through society, universities, and research, while military buildup and cuts to social services go hand in hand? Ingar Solty will address this topic in a short talk on the “Innere Zeitenwende.” Afterward, we’ll discuss this together, including the future of civilian clauses at universities. We invite you to join us in closing the exhibition. Admission is free.
